First day of school

Four weeks into the new school year, let's take a look back at the big day it all began:

Decoration detail. The kids and I made a gazillion of these little cones and strung them across the living room. To the uninitiated, cones filled with candy and small presents are THE essential feature of a little German's first day of school:

Cool, huh? Max's cone had a medieval theme (his latest passion) and contained a lot of his school supplies, along with the mandatory sweets, of course.

Anna got a smaller version for attending a new kindergarten, all by herself now.

Anyways, we kicked off the festivities with an inter-faith church service held in honor of the new first graders. The service lasted for about an hour, featured sermons by both a Catholic and a Lutheran preacher, a few hymns, and, interestingly, a blessing given to each child.

Walking over to the school after the service.

Max meeting his classmates for the first time. His class is actually quite big, with 27 kids of all sorts of ethnic and social backgrounds.

Proudly presenting: his first homework assignment!

While the kids were in class, the parents were served coffee and cake out in the school yard. Anna used the time to do a little hopscotching.

All done for the first day!

Next, we headed to Düsseldorf for a wonderful cruise on the Rhine (and no, Germans are not allowed to smile in pictures).

Passing under the Rheinbrücke.

Media harbor, featuring architectural designs by Frank Gehry.

Strolling through downtown Düsseldorf with Nana, Oma, Opa and great-aunt Renate.

What a great day! Let's do it again in, say, two years? :)

Wow. It must of taken you ages to fill that cone up. I bet Ava could even fit in it! That is such a fun tradition. Hope he is enjoying Kindergarten. Way to go Max! Oh, by the way, the little cone decorations in the house were super cute.
